Second leg of the Wigley Super Randonneur Perm Series. This is an extension of the Eccleshall 200 which starts from Dean Row (near Stockport and Wilmslow) and heads west over undulating Cheshire roads to Helsby.
One of Shropshire's blue remembered hills |
From Helsby the route turns southbound through Waverton, then diverts from the Eccleshall route to take in Saighton and Holt. You will ride past Bangor on Dee race course, so it might be worth while checking their race dates as I recommend avoiding those.
At Gobowen you could just call in at the Co-op near the Railway station for a snack (and the all important till receipt!), but there is the excellent Betty's Cafe just before Whittington, at Derwyn College and Hospital.
After Gobowen, there are some delightful Shropshire lanes as you skirt the spectacular scenery around Criggion to reach Montgomery. You could even call in at the Knockin Shop.
After a cafe stop at Montgomery, the route heads in a north-easterly direction to find a petrol station or the Co-op at Wem, then on to Hodnet. Note that there is a useful shortcut from Hodnet along Station Road, ignoring the "no through road" sign, through a gate and over the A53 Hodnet bypass as you head towards Eccleshall for another shop till receipt.
You pick up the Eccleshall 200 route on the final north-bound leg through Haslington, Sandbach and Holmes Chapel to finish at Dean Row.
